Rise Against
Revolutions Per Minute (Fat Wreck Chords)

By: Alex Steininger

Rise Against's Revolutions Per Minute is a solid enough album. However, the tough guy act from the vocalist, even if unintentional, his snarl, rough and tumble voice, and the band's attempt to match it with harder-edged pop-punk, loses points. The melodies are squashed, the hooks replaced, and the angry and fury placed at the forefront. Therefore, you don't feel compelled to sing along, met with a cold front instead as you get the cold shoulder as they spew out their agenda. It's a tough thing to deal with, and even after you listen to it and try to combat it, you just can't. Again, it's solid enough, hardcore-decorated pop-punk, but without the warm, appealing pop that makes pop-punk so great, and not enough straight up punk rock, you just can't get into the songs of Rise Against. I'll give it a C.
