Yes New York (Vice Recordings)

By: Alex Steininger

Yes New York features the in-the-now, buzz bands of the moment from New York's ultra hot garage and indie rock scene, including a live cut from The Strokes ("New York City Cops" live in Iceland). Other bands included on this album range from the moody, atmospheric pop of Longwave ("Next Plateau"), a poppy garage offering from The Walkmen ("Rue the Day"), an indie-rock gem from Interpol entitled "NYC", and "Deceptacon (dfa remix)", a danceable cut from Le Tigre. And let's not forget The Natural History's beautiful "The Right Hand", a jagged, math-y guitar-rock number, or Radio 4's new wave rock on "Save Your City". Truly a hotbed for actively, Yes New York does NY rock - though I could think of a handful of bands that deserve to be on this disc. Dare I mention it? Two In Music We Trust Records' bands, The Damnwells and Suffrajett. But, even without them, this disc paints a diverse, accurate portrayal of the buzz going on in NY right now. I'll give it a B.
