Future Kings Of Spain (Red Flag)

 Spanish is their name and Irish is their blood, but America, circa The Year Punk Broke, is where their hearts lie. As misleading as their name may be, Future Kings Of Spain are pretty straightforward with their angular and melodic indie rock. The press has been drooling over the fact that they're like a perfect amalgam of all that was great about the late 80s and early 90s in US guitar rock. Yep, there's some Pixies ("Venetian Blinds") and Dinosaur Jr. ("Meanest Sound"), not to mention a whole hell of a lot of Sonic Youth (check out your battered copy of Goo for influences), and this self-titled debut album is great for having it. Anyone who grew up when DGC was an exciting record label and Lollapalooza was about revealing great bands and not such a money sucking whore, will feel right at home. While the opening track, oddly enough their first ever single, "A Place For Everything", may come off like Nick Olivieri's Queens Of The Stone Age contributions, it settles down as soon as the next track, "Your Starlight", kicks in. From there on in, Future Kings Of Spain becomes a haven for heart-thumpingly biting guitar riffs, unexpectedly warm pop hooks and a brilliant rush of adrenaline. It's the album that you've been waiting for, for the last five years.
