Kill Them With Kindness (Better Looking)

 Stealing the radio-friendly, emotive superstar status away from Jimmy Eat World, L.A.'s The Jealous Sound look set to not only conquer their market, but also become one of the biggest breakthrough acts of 2003. With their music being played in Volkswagen and Apple commercials, The Jealous Sound have struck gold with their debut full-length album, Kill Them With Kindness. Produced by Tim O'Heir (Sebadoh, Superdrag), the album uses a potent mixture of killer melodies and crisp riffs, along with some wise and inspirational lyrics courtesy of singer Blair Shehan (formerly of Knapsack). The pop hooks are understated in a way that avoids any fear of one-hit wonderdom, unlike the unfortunate occurrence for JEW's "The Middle". As "Anxious Arms", "Guard It Closely" and "Hope For Us" all prove, The Jealous Sound are more akin to writing aural therapy than popular anthems. Their sentimentality is equally efficient on the heartrending "Recovery Room", a song so tender it makes Ben Gibbard sound like an insensitive monster. A long-awaited album (three years to be precise), Kill Them With Kindness makes up for the lost time with one of the best feeling rock albums of the year.
