Marc Olsen Brighter When (Roslyn Recordings) By: Alex Steininger
Seattle-based singer-songwriter Marc Olsen's third solo record is indeed the charm. Brighter When, released on Seattle upstart indie Roslyn Recordings, carries itself with confidence, Olsen coming off as a seasoned singer-songwriter, singing without fear or hesitation, and opening himself up more and more as the album progresses. His deep, rich voice make you melt when he sings, while his sparse instrumentation, from the light percussion through the mood enhancing guitar, Olsen knows how to shoot from the hip and create whatever mood he wants in the process, the listener attentively following every move. Some may call it folk, while others will call it folk-rock. Both terms are very limiting, though Olsen does incorporate both into his playbook, however, he also institutes subtle traces of pop, ambiance, and even some country flavor. The end result is that Brighter When is just a damn fine release from one of the most under-appreciated singer-songwriters out there touring. I'll give it an A.
