People Are Cruel (Transcopic)

 Graham Coxon's proteges Mower have followed in the guitarist's footsteps and recruited the talents of legendary Blur, Idlewild and The Smiths producer Stephen Street for their second album. Of course, when dealing with the gritty sounds of a band like Mower, Street's magic is hidden behind flailing guitars and amplifiers on the verge of exploding. What the lads in Mower have done with Street at the helm is get an expert to tweak an album that would normally be in a grimy basement. The scuzzy thrills and bizarre lyrical content on People Are Cruel are plenty, feeding the rudimentary Kinks-meets-Mudhoney buzz on "After Dark" and "Sun Sun Sun", while making huge leaps forward from their self-titled 2001 album. "Rest In Peace" depicts this progression most, seeing their own "Waterloo Sunset" come to life. People Are Cruel is an invigorating addition to any record collection.
