Lou B's Wasted Pieces '87-'93 (Shrimper)

By: Alex Steininger

Wasted Pieces '87-'93 is a collection, as the title suggests, of outtakes, demos, and b-sides from Lou Barlow's Shrimper days between 1987 and 1993. Barlow's, best known as the front man for Sebadoh and Folk Implosion, home recordings are, as to be expected, hushed, lo-fi, quiet, and often whispery indie-folk compositions. Despite their recording obstacles, including tape hiss and other low fidelity blockers, thrives, using the negatives as a positive to comprise the anti-folk, uber-indie, unsettling songs that make up this album. With a lot of extras (samples) and plenty of noise, Barlow (under the moniker Sentridoh) delivers a shattering, against-all-rules peak into his quirky, anti-all musical side. I'll give this a B-.
