The Kathy Walker Band The Kathy Walker Band (Self-Released) By: Mark A. Lawrence the IV
Toll loud every bell tower from coast to coast, for my fear that the great soul sound of the fifties and sixties was lost to the ages has been proven false. Soul is living strong in the full-bodied voice of Kathy Walker. I saw her perform as part of the Northwest Soul Collective at this year's Waterfront Blues Festival and was impressed with her presence and the attitude of her music. What I found on her CD though properly kicked my ass. This medium-sized woman controls a voice like Aretha Franklin, which she uses to cover a wide range of music, from the slow Otis Redding-like ballad of "Good Thing" to the funky sass of "Make It Your Business." After hearing "Clean Up Woman," you have so much respect for what this woman can do with her voice; you can't help but refer to her as Mrs. Walker. This song also has a playful line that makes you pause and say "Now That's Cool," just proving that like so many purveyors of soul Kathy Walker has surrounded herself with a band of skillful musicians. This is not only a great CD, but also a band that you should take every opportunity to support, from seeing them live to telling every one you know about these champions of soul. Your going to fall in love with this music if not the powerful smolder of Kathy Walker's voice. Rating: A+
