Hem Rabbit Songs (Dreamworks Records) By: Alex Steininger
Rabbit Songs, the debut from this New York Americana/lush pop outfit, is stunning. Weaving through tales of heartache, loss, and redemption, Hem's stories are tried and true tales of every day life. But, the way they're sung, front woman Sally Ellyson's motherly-esque voice comforting and reassuring you, soften the blow, making the tales that much more fragile, and that more innocent. All the while, instrumentation such as viola, violin, cello, banjo, flute, horns, and pedal steel enrich each song they accompany, as the band melds the glorious world of orchestrated pop. The lush, vibrant sounds of the strings painting a beautiful skyline for the back porch, down-home backdrop, the outcome a rustic, roots-y, and completely mesmerizing sound that will have fans of alt. country, folk, pop, and even rock drooling for these eloquently composed, beautiful numbers. I'll give it an A.
