Kid Dynamite
Cheap Shots, Youth Anthems (Jade Tree)

By: Cam Lindsay

Though Kid Dynamite is no more, Jade Tree has found a fitting posthumous tribute. Compiling tracks from compilations, splits, live performances and demos, as well as some interesting covers, the band's legacy can continue to live on for a while longer. Such a release may seem a little absurd for a band who lasted only three years (1997-2000), yet Kid Dynamite have the material to make this 29-track album worthwhile. Included is the first demo, which deserves praise for setting the band's production measures, something they never strayed far from in their time. The choice of covers aren't too surprising, with killer versions of classics like Black Flag's "Rise Above", Minor Threat's "I Don't Wanna Hear It" and "Hateful" by The Clash. Only the live tracks fail to keep the torch lit, with some poor sound quality interfering with the album's flow. However, the extensive liner notes and bonus DVD (of previously unreleased live footage), make Cheap Shots, Youth Anthems anything but a cheap farewell to a much loved underground band.
