Kristin Hersh
The Grotto (4AD)

By: Alex Steininger

On her sixth solo record, Throwing Muses front woman Kristin Hersh delivers a weepy, slow-moving, raindrop-like acoustic record. With sparse instrumentation, just Hersh and her guitar, filled out by friends - Andrew Bird with the violin and Howe Gelb on the piano - Hersh's lyrics become the focal point. And, though the melodies aren't as crisp as the once were, and the songs aren't as memorable as some of the ones found on Hersh's other solo outings, the lyrics are still as stunning as ever. And thus The Grotto, the airy folk record it is, still stands up tall and proud and makes you want to cry along with Hersh, your tears dropping as Hersh picks her acoustic guitar and takes you inside her world. I'll give this a B-.
