Kelis
Tasty (Virgin)

By: Cam Lindsay

Often underappreciated compared to the likes of Beyonc? and Missy Elliott, Kelis remained out of the limelight with her first two records. Tasty should be a completely different affair. Back again are The Neptunes, who first gained attention producing the majority of Kelis's debut album, Kaleidoscope. With a food theme lurking throughout the album (the intro says it all about Kelis' true interest), Kelis mixes state of the art hip-hop, groove-filled R&B and even the odd bit of rock. And like all albums of this ilk, stress is on the guest appearances (Kelis made her first on ODB's "Got Your Money'). Included are her fianc? Nas, Raphael Saadiq and the man of the hour, OutKast's Andr? 3000. Highlights will always be cuts by the Neptunes since they seem to give her choice cuts for helping establish them. "Milkshake", the first single, everyone knows and loves, whether they actually know what it's about or not. One of the best songs from 2003, it's got the aggressiveness to it that fuels Kelis and sets her apart from all the others. Elsewhere, the back tracks to "Flashback" and "Rolling Through The Hood" could easily have been used for Mr. Timberlake, but thankfully, it goes to show that he can't have everything. The Nas appearance is interesting to hear, displaying the dynamics of the couple's relationship. Unfortunately, it isn't a duet (Nas mumbles here and there), but the graphic details given show MTV certainly couldn't air Newlyweds: Nas and Kelis before midnight. Thank god for Kelis and her wild style.
