Cryptic Slaughter Convicted and Money Talks (Relapse Records) By: Jeb Branin
I feel stupid having the review for these two re-issues be so short, but c'mon, what can I say about two of the fastest and most seminal albums from the 80s crossover/thrashcore scene? These albums were and are masterpieces and there isn't an extreme music fan anywhere in the world who has any excuse not to own them. It was CRYPTIC SLAUGHTER along with bands like D.R.I., ACCUSED, AGNOSTIC FRONT, C.O.C., THE CRUMBSUCKERS, SLAYER, HELLBASTARD, NAPALM DEATH etc. that in the mid-80s turned a world of metalheads onto hardcore and a planet of punks onto metal. Some say this blending was the death of both genres, others (like me) hailed it as a whole new genre unto itself. Without a doubt, the power violence of the 90s and the extreme thrash of the Y2Ks would not be the same without the undeniably heavy CRYPTIC SLAUGHTER influence. I freely admit that "back in the day" both these albums were key elements in the soundtrack of my life. The re-issues come with bonus tracks (live and demo) and so offer something new even for those who own the originals.
