Mates Of State
Team Boo (Polyvinyl)

By: Cam Lindsay

In the span of three years, married couple Kori Gardner and Jason Hammel (aka Mates Of State) have recorded three incredibly harmonious full-lengths. One of which, their debut My Solo Project (which was re-released earlier in 2003 by their new home, Polyvinyl Records) has already gained "classic" status because of a short period of inaccessibility. Of course, Team Boo, their third, doesn't tread much new ground for Mates Of State, but do you really want to hear them attempt a rendition of Sun Ra's "Space Is The Place" anyway? Yet, their misleadingly simple organ-meet-drums formula exceeds any expectations, stopping, starting, twisting and turning when you least expect it. "Ha Ha" picture-perfectly captures this, breaking down half way through, with the pair completely changing the pace to a laughing frenzy of bounce along fun. "An Experiment" does add another musical element into the fold (hence the title), introducing a wondrous horn section to much surprise. Superbly energizing like that first cup of coffee in the morning, Team Boo is a great pick-me-up.
