Millionaire
Outside the Simian Flock (PIAS America)

By: Alex Steininger

With pop splendor spliced into their garage-rock sound, Millionaire's Outside the Simian Flock is at first yet another rock revivalist record at a time when garage-rock is all the fad. But, upon further inspection, these guys aren't chasing the bus or trying to capitalize on an in sound. Instead, they're guys that love to re-create and put their touch on a classic rock sound, updating it with pop smarts alongside shoe gazing and even some Brit-pop influences. Outside the Simian Flock is pop full of genuine, beautifully crafted melodies, acid-dripping guitars, and settling vocals that make you want to lay down, float in the sky, while the melodies wrap around you. Here is a solid offering that knocks contemporaries like The Strokes (I know, an easy target) on their ass. A lot less rock and a lot more pop, they dodge the garage-rock tag while still indulging in it. I'll give this a B+.
