The Elected
Me First (Sub Pop)

By: Cam Lindsay

Rilo Kiley's co-singer/songwriter Blake Sennett garnered critical success last year with his band's The Execution Of All Things. However, in comparison, Sennett's best work appears to be with his solo project, The Elected. Like Elliott Smith if he had performed with Dntel, The Elected is a gracious collaboration between well-crafted, soul searching pop songs and electronic undertones. Sennett's sweetheart vocals are fragile and tender, with some great lyrics like "And if you see me down at the liquor store please don't tell my dad/And if you see my dad down in front of the liquor store don't tell me anything at all" ("Greetings in Braille") to help draw the listener into his L.A. world. Me First benefits from a healthy cast of supporting musicians, such as Jimmy Tamborello (Dntel, The Postal Service), Jenny Lewis (Rilo Kiley), Daniel Brummel (Ozma) and Orenda Fink (Azure Ray), to beef up the one man project. The Elected is a breath of fresh air that manages to cheer you up with a big hug of the warm heartfelt pop.
