Ima Robot Ima Robot (Virgin) By: Cam Lindsay
Ima Robot are kind of a difficult band to take seriously. Their spazzy, retro-futuristic post-punk is up there with Hot Hot Heat, yet at times, it seems almost too slick for their own good. With a handful of synthesizers and half of Beck's past backing band (bassist Justin Meldal-Johnsen and drummer Joey Waronker), they're fit to join the ranks of rock bands aiming to bring back it all back to the dance floor. "Dynamite" and "A Is For Action" are born and bread to get silly to and prove Ima Robot aren't just about style. Substance does fall a little short in the modern rock slowburner, "Scream" and "Dirty Life", which conjures up images of Duran Duran's unsuccessful late 80s funk infatuation. Ima Robot seem a little too L.A. to fit into the credible NYC disco-punk scene they so want to belong to. Maybe if they cut down on the gloss and quirkiness, they'd lose that silly aloofness that sets them apart from bands like The Rapture and Radio 4.
