Single Frame Wetheads Come Running (Already Gone) By: Cam Lindsay
The problem with labeling a band "indie rock" is that it's such an ambiguous tag. However, that's exactly what Austin, Texas trio Single Frame is. Their debut album, Wetheads Come Running, combines every little thing you can think of throwing into a musical melting pot, and it's better for being that way. Somehow squeezing in 20 tracks under 40 minutes, the band has skipped looking for their potential and hit their stride immediately. Each track is undeniably different, yet there isn't a moment where they sound unlike themselves. Fusing both angular and fuzzy guitar riffs, danceable post-punk beats, new wave synths and sporadic bits of math rock rhythms, everything is sewn neatly together by the clever pop hooks. With the help of some introspective lyrics and brazen vocal delivery, the Modest Mouse comparisons are easy to make, but there is too much to this band to pigeonhole them in any way. The organ-heavy "Post Daydream Forecast Endeavor" has an elusive personality that slips in and out of schizophrenia. "The Slip", the hands down choice for a single, should win an award for its audacious beat and the synth resembling a steel drum, a possible first on the indie rock scene. Let's hope mass excitement and hysteria sees that these guys become stars.
