Volcano, I'm Still Excited!! Talkie Walkie (Polyvinyl) By: Cam Lindsay
Sometimes a name can describe a sound, even though it makes very little sense. Austin's Volcano, I'm Still Excited!! (make sure you pronounce it with only two exclamation points) win points for their wildly imaginative name, which some claim was nicked from that dreadful film starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan (I plead ignorance, since I haven't seen it). And with such a great name, how could they not fit it into the core of one of the songs. Their self-titled debut album is an impressive pop experiment that came into place when frontman Mark Duplass began suffering from tendonitis. His ability to play guitar became limited, so he switched to keyboards, drafted Craig Montoro to take axe duties and John Thomas Robinette III played drums. Call me a sadist, but Duplass' injury is our gain, as this record is one of the year's more ambitious efforts. In a nut shell, Volcano, I'm Still Excited!! is rich in sugary melodies, high stakes drama and enough rhythm to set a dance floor ablaze with moving bodies. "Trunk Of My Car" features the threesome's immaculate harmonizing abilities that dictates the song's mid-tempo pace, while "Echo Park", in all of its 67 seconds, gives a taste of the endearment that comes with liking this band.
