A Snow Capped Romance (Roadrunner Records)

 36 Crazyfists show no sign of a sophomore slump on the quartet's second release, A SNOW CAPPED ROMANCE. In fact, to the band's credit, this 11-track encounter blows away the band's debut in spades. From the infectious opener "At The End of August", the clobbering rhythms and heavy-handed grooves kick you in the head with a fervor that rivals Deftones. From there, this album continuously gains momentum, as songs like the System of a Down-esque "The Heart and the Shape" and the utterly maddening riff that opens "Kenai" fuel the metal fires. By the time the album's gem hits (track five for those keeping score at home), the pristine and powerful "Skin and Atmosphere", you know that this Alaskan tribe have in fact made simply an amazing album, and there's still six tracks to go. From emotive crests and waves to moments of pure metal explosiveness, and above all, a tantalizing display of dynamics, A Snow Capped Romance has it all, and if there were any justice in this world, this release will catapult 36 Crazyfists straight to metal's A-list, must like Toxicity did for System or White Pony did for Deftones.
