Black Label Society
Hangover Music Volume VI (Spitfire Records)

By: Mike SOS

Stripping down (for the most part), the boozing bombastic guitar assault of Zakk Wylde and his Black Label Society get the unplugged treatment on the sixth release from Ozzy's axe man's cult metal outfit. Liberally applying the same kind of tactics as Wylde sought with his former Southern rock project Pride and Glory, the 15-track release contains a bevy of tender acoustic guitars with some wistful electrified solos on the top for a solid shot of rock a la Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Alice in Chains (who Zakk dedicates a song to on "Layne"). Showcasing Wylde's sensitive side through heartfelt songwriting, songs like "Won't Find It Here" and "Damage Is Done", as well as his typical monstrous guitar chops and insightful piano playing on "Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow", Zakk dubs this disc as the soundtrack for the recovery time after the first five of Black Label's no holds barred, raucous installments. Let's just call it another triumphant release from one of today's most versatile guitar heroes.
