The Modern Day Saint / Sonny
Tennessee Isn't Too Far Away (Self-released)

By: Mike SOS

This split CD features two Massachusetts punk bands with a slightly different outlook on music. First up is The Modern Day Saint, whose screamo vocals and cascading guitar lines mix the best of Avail with Thursday to comprise an empowered yet fragile punk rock creation. From there, the California punk sound mixes with the East Coast rationale to make up Sonny's three tracks, the best of which is the pristine piano-led punk of "Really A Wonderful Night", which is reminiscent of bands like Saosin and Open Hand. If you like the melodic side of punk without all of the senseless aggression, then this release is worth a listen.
