Should Confusion (Merlin Pool Music)

 Brandon Patton's intriguing amalgamation of complaint rock, sugary sweet pop, old-school bluegrass, and beatnik verses set to experimental drum beats, is quite appropriately entitled Should Confusion. This album is unpredictable and weird, like a collection of mood swings each with its own song, and depending on your mood when listening, it is at least mildly entertaining. Patton's inner artist rears his bizarre little head through the twisted modifications on various musical styles, all meshed together into one sloppily produced conglomeration of personal expression. He digs deep into the instrument closet for an array of winds, strings, and beats to attach to his streams of consciousness. The final track on the album is the most noteworthy for demonstrating Patton's distantly placed potential for the mainstream, with a catchy guitar part and endearing harmonies. Props to him for his experimental nature and tendency to cross-reference, only I suspect that his scattered approach is more likely to serve as a downfall than an advantage. Randomness sells lottery tickets, not records.
