Carte Blanche Summer's End (Shmat Records) By: Amanda Mathson
When feeling reminiscent this summer for the introspection of the dreary winter months, go on and step inside, close the blinds, and soak up some Carte Blanche in lieu of sunlight. In the course of soothing compositions, this handsome duo draw a direct line from the ears to the heart in an artful way, entangling personal affliction with gentle nudges of optimism. With the dynamic harmonies of male/female vocals set to the soft strum-strum-strumming of the guitar, they draw you into their web of dreamy contemplation most appropriately reserved for rainy days. Although the introductory track is a weak start, the album builds gradual momentum in its resonating melodies, haunting vocals and guitar accompaniments enchanting enough to transport you to another season and/or state of mind. The album's standout track is "Today I'm Crying", with its smart rhythms and chord changes, particularly during the bridge.
