Zao
The Funeral of God (Ferret)

 A renowned Christian metal outfit, Zao has written an entire album based around the concept of the death of God. As blasphemous as that sounds to the Bible belt and church-core enthusiasts, it's still nowhere near the Morbid Angel zone, so all the pious people can relax. Unless they're bodies are shaken violently by the din created by these pioneers of hardcore, of course. This incarnation of Zao, a band forever in a constant state of flux, seems to be leaning on the more mainstream metal sound than previous efforts, although there's enough pulverizing pit movements in songs like "Live...From the Funeral of God" to compensate. Longtime fans may be disappointed with the path that Zao has chosen, but no one can question the band's willingness to tackle the touchy subject that imagines the loss of the very foundation of its beliefs. The Funeral of God, although extremely ambitious in theory, is executed as basic as any current noisy metalcore clan, stripping away the usual power Zao has yielded in past releases.
