Beaten Back to Pure The Burning South (Devil Doll) By: Mike SOS
They're big, hairy, and rock hard as hell, yet it's not any of your blood relatives, and that's only the half of it. Virginia's Beaten Back to Pure is the quintet in question, and The Burning South is the quintet's southern fried metal assault on your hapless senses. Imagine Alabama Thunder Pussy, Down, Crowbar, Eyehategod, and Lynyrd Skynyrd hunting in the woods with an endless supply of whiskey, weed, and ammo, and you've got the volatility of this band in sight. It grooves, it churns, it slays, but most of all, it kicks some serious ass the way rock 'n' roll is intended to, as tracks like "Smothered in Sundress" steamroll you over with stoner rock goodness, while the uneasy title and feel of "Where the Sewer Meets the Sea" in engulfed with a lethal mix of swamp rock sludgery and '70s metallic swagger. Beaten Back to Pure has created a shit-kicking, dirt loving, beer drinking album full of American metal anthems, and will fit nicely between your Clutch and COC collection.
