The Sad Riders
Lay Your Head on the Soft Rock (Doghouse Records)

By: Alex Steininger

Dark, shadowy acoustic indie-rock with a slightly country flavor ("Where's The Light", "J.-M."), The Sad Riders' Lay Your Head on the Soft Rock is a collection of crying-in-your-beer, broken-hearted laments that take their cue from old, traditional country. When they rock it up, the country influences shine through, but when they keep the songs somber and sparse, the hurt and pain overshadow the country and lean the songs more in the direction of Nick Drake. It's a good record, with some good feelings; it's only fault is that the songs seem to bleed into one other after awhile, making the record's long playing status sometimes grind on you. I'll give it a C+.
