Patterson Hood
Killers and Stars (New West Records)

By: Alex Steininger

Drive-By Trucker Patterson Hood's solo album, Killers and Stars might be exactly what you'd expect from the southern rocker gone acoustic. Delivering sparse acoustic folk-country, primarily relying on his guitar and his scratchy voice, Hood spins tales of growing up and living life with an old-time touch. Playing heartily to the traditional side of his roots passion, Hood creates a record that is honest and real, and sounds just as in place today as it would have back in the 30s or 40s. However, it isn't anything that hasn't been done before and isn't anything exceptionally mind-blowing. It is simple, plain, but true to form, which is something nobody can ever take away from Hood. Still a solid offering, though sometimes it feels like a few of the songs need more than his guitar and voice to really excel. I'll give it a B-.
