The Dirty Projectors
Slave's Graves & Ballads (Happy Happy Birthday To Me Records)

By: Alex Steininger

Stripped down, acoustic pop songs spruced up with full on orchestration (from The Orchestral Society for the Preservation of the Orchestra), here is a record that remains sparse and light, even when they're adding quite a lot of orchestration. With an experimental, noise edge courtesy of the orchestra (on the first seven tracks), The Dirty Projectors are able to deliver a unique, refreshing outlook on indie-rock and folk, as well as orchestral pop, fusing the three into a melting pop of twisted proportions. Slave's Graves & Ballads is an experimental, quirky, if not downright eerie infusion of lush and sparse that will simultaneously peak your interest as it makes the hairs stand up on your neck. I'll give it a B-.
