 Holy retro rock! Swedish purveyors of the ghosts of rock ?n? roll?s past Witchcraft have brought forth a 10-track release chock full of psychedelic blues, heavy metal soul, and foundational stoner rock. Influences such as Black Sabbath, Cream and countless classic rock icons of the ?60s and ?70s are vicariously channeled on songs like "If Wished Were Horses", as this band sufficiently showcases its jamming know-how on tracks like "You Suffer" as well as its deep appreciation of the early days of doom metal on "Queen of Bees" and their take on Pentagram?s "When the Screams Come". Attentive pupils of the golden age of rock, everything down to the actual lo-fi recording is as authentic as a release from the early 1970?s, a trait that many bands wouldn?t even attempt in the age of studio trickery. FIREWOOD is an album that lovingly recalls a time when bands took massive quantities of drugs and played with undaunted passion, and is a must have for the older folks that have lost their faith that music doesn?t sound like it used to anymore.
