The Bomboras/The Ghastly Ones
Head Shrinkin' Fun/A-Haunting We Will Go-Go (Zombie-A-Go-Go/DGC)

By: Geoff Melton

A-Haunting We Will Go-Go from The Bomboras and Head Shrinkin' Fun from The Ghastly Ones mark a promising debut for Zombie-A-Go-Go, the new label from Rob Zombie, but don't expect to hear White Zombie-styled music. These two releases show Rob's penchant for Dick Dale-styled surf rock, but both bands then manage to take that style and twist it into their own uniquely different creation. The Bomboras, the best of the two, mix it up with a 60's style garage rock groove along with organ and fuzzed-out guitars for a partying groove that doesn't let up until the very end (these guys sound like they'd be hard to beat live). The Ghastly Ones on the other hand stick closer to the surf sound, but add a "Groovy Ghoulies" monster vibe, coming up with somewhat of a "concept" album with short spoken word tracks about a visit to Doctor Diablo's place interspersed between songs with titles like "Ghastly Stomp", "Hangman Hangten", "Haulin' Hearse" and "Surfin' Spooks". The tunes are good and A-Haunting We Will Go-Go makes for a solid album, but you get the feeling the concept might get a bit old quick. Hopefully Rob has alot more great albums like these up his sleeves.
