overtHHHrow / What Happens Next?
Split CD (Soulforce Records)

By: Jeb Branin

The HHH side project band overtHHHrow was a tribute to the impact of 80s speed metal on the hardcore underground. The HHH tracks on this split were recorded over a decade ago but are being released here for the first time. They give a definite nod to the like of Slayer/Hirax/Vio-lence while still incorporating lots of GBH meets thrash style hardcore. It is a totally dated sound and one done better by a handful of other bands but nonetheless these songs are able to rip it up and kick it out. For those of us who thrived (instead of merely survived) in the 80s crossover scene this is bound to be a winner. The WHN? tracks are live from a radio performance and capture the band about as raw and unrelenting as I have ever heard them. Their neo-retro-thrash (how's that for a genre tag?) is the perfect foil to overtHHHRow because it often hails the same era of the underground but does so from a seemingly different perspective. Not a masterpiece by any means but definitely a solid CD.
