The Flaming Stars Ginmill Perfume: The Story So Far 1995-2000 (Alternative Tentacles) By: Jeb Branin
I've heard lots of rumblings about this band but this is the first time I have been able to actually hear their music. I didn't know what to expect, which is a good thing because I could have never expected anything like this. This CD collects all their recordings so far and as one might expect that means there is a lot of hit and miss but man when they hit, it is a home run. For example, the first track "Like Trash" is a rock 'n' roll barnstorm. Wild bopping, bouncing, and boogie galore (and is that some surf guitar? Methinks it be). It did strike me as odd that this was on Alternative Tentacles since much of the music from THE FLAMING STARS is pure 70s flavored (early 70s), which is supposed to be the decade that punk was rejecting... Just goes to show you that even a label like A.T., which has one of the most diverse band rosters in underground music, can still expand beyond their limits.
