Concerts for a Landmine Free World (Vanguard Records)

By: Alex Steininger

Eleven songs to benefit the Campaign for a Landmine Free World, part of Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation, all recorded live at various shows, showcases the best of some of the world's most influential songwriters. Included on this compilation are Steve Earle ("Christmas In Washington"), Kris Kristofferson ("Shipwrecked in the Eighties"), Gillian Welch & David Rawlings ("Morphine"), John Prine ("Big Ol' Goofy World"), and Emmylou Harris ("The Pearl"), to name a few.

Soulful, lyrically deep songs stream from one track to another. The above mentioned artists as well as Guy Clark with Verlon Thompson, Mary Chain Carpenter, Bruce Cockburn, Nanci Griffith, Terry Allen, and Patty Griffin all donate their songs (and subsequent royalties) to help a cause they strongly believe in.

Fans of roots music and timeless singer-songwriters will want to rush to the store and pick this up, as all artists on the album deliver passionate, captivating performances that will astonish and remind you why you love each artist. I'll give this an A+.
