The Charlatans UK
Songs From the Other Side (Beggars Banquet)

By: Alex Steininger

Melodically-heavy, psychedelic-Brit-pop songs from a band known for their ability to combine intoxicating hooks alongside portrait-esque lyricism, Songs From The Other Side, a collection of b-sides from 1990-1997, gives you a great overview of what this band is all about.

Swirling guitars, stretched out vocals, and mesmerizing rhythms all play into the aural fascination of these gems. "Happy To Die", "Stir It Up", "Subterranean", "Your Skies Are Mine", and "Don't Need A Gun" demonstrate the band's ability to write relaxed, slumbering songs that seem mild and harmless, but underneath it all buzz with an insatiable rock appetite.

Brit-pop at its best, The Charlatans UK always reigned above the rest of the modern Brit-pop bands, making the others sound like pretenders as they created lush, full, warm pop centerpieces that floated and buzzed. I'll give this an A.
