Helms McCarthy (Kimchee Records) By: Alex Steininger
Using indie rock as their canvas, Helms' McCarthy takes advantage of space and atmosphere. A mind-spinning array of brushing percussion, floating bass, sweeping guitars, and the occasional rock outburst, fronted with talk-sing vocals and plenty of screaming, Helms' sound is many different things, changing like a chameleon each time you think you've got a grasp on it. One minute they're swerving into the post-hardcore lane, the next minute they're all about the indie pop. Try to understand them and you will fail. Ignore what they do and it will consume you. Play it loud, absorb it, and enjoy it and you will take all you need to from it. I'll give it a B-.
