House Of Low Culture
Gettin' Sentimental 2x7" (Robotic Empire)

By: Jeb Branin

This double 7" initially seems to be a huge departure for Robotic Empire Records, and maybe it is, but to be honest, I'm not surprised by it. Robotic Empire has a keen ear for music that is unique and distinctive (which is saying a hell of a lot considering the genre constraints it operates in) but at the same time delivers the goods with passion and fervor. HOUSE OF LOW CULTURE is an ambient/noise/whatever undertaking by Aaron of ISIS/HydraHead Records. It is beyond appropriate that there are two records here, because it is symbolic of the two personalities on display. One persona, Dr. Jekyll we'll call it, is melodic, passionate, ethereal, and contemplative. The other persona, a Mr. Hyde, is angst ridden, dark, desolate and noisy. Rooted in the guitar, this double 7" is significantly more listenable than most others of it's ilk. Almost ALL others, actually.
