Holopaw Holopaw (Sub Pop Records) By: Alex Steininger
Calling Gainesville, Florida home, Holopaw, fronted by John Orth (who played in Ugly Casanova with Modest Mouse's Isaac Brock), writes delicate indie-country songs led by an acoustic guitar and Orth's ready-to-shatter voice. Feeling as if he needs a shoulder to cry on, Orth's voice is fragile, lending itself to the country-tingled, gentle strumming and sparse instrumentation of the music. Their self-titled debut finds itself leaning back and forth, one moment sounding splendidly country, and the next minute indie-acoustic singer-songwriter fare. And though they're best when they're playing country, their acoustic pop songs hold up well, too. I'll give it a B.
