The Thermals
The Thermals (Sub Pop)

By: Alex Steininger

A Portland, Oregon collective featuring Hutch Harris and Kathy Foster of the indie-rock outfit Hutch and Kathy and the All Girl Summer Fun Band. Kind of Like Spitting's Ben Barnett. And Operacycle's Jordan Hudson. The Thermals quickly won the respect of their peers, including Death Cab for Cutie's Ben Gibbard, who got Sub Pop to give the band a listen - and four months after their formation they were formed. On this four song EP, the band delivers loud, sloppy, garage-rock by way of punk, playing carelessly, for fun, and as fast and noisy as they can. The result are quickly, here and then gone nuggets of speed and noise. It's rock and roll at its best, embodying the fun, 'fuck it' spirit that makes rock and roll so great. I'll give it a B-.
