themselves the no one. (Anticon) By: Cam Lindsay
Former members of cLOUDDEAD, doseone and jel have been raising eyebrows as themselves (formerly known as them). A two man hip-hop outfit, themselves push aside the norm of Neptunes/Timbaaland productions for a style completely of their own and true to their widely praised Anticon label. The album's title, the no music., rings very true to the music. Taking on a no-wave approach to hip-hop, themselves avoid boundaries with their music, cutting and pasting samples, rhymes and beats any and every which way. The moody and exploratory backdrops venture into deep territory at times on tracks like "You Devil You" and "Out In The Open", reaching far and wide into leftfield. Though a lot of the time it's teetering on the avant-garde, the pair don't completely rule out popular areas of hip-hop. "Dark Sky Demo" is a straightforward track that plays with components of jazz and commercial aspects of presenting lyrics. themselves are impassioned and tight with what they do, and they seem to have enough cred that if they decide to leave the underground they could succeed nicely, but for now, their sharp, psychedelic hip-hop is untouchable right where it is.
