The Special Goodness Land Air Sea (The Control Group/NOS Recordings) By: Alex Steininger
The Special Goodness is Pat Wilson (Weezer) and Atom Willard (Rocket from the Crypt). Playing guitar and singing lead, Pat Wilson steps up front, while friend Willard sits down at the kit. Together, the two deliver power-pop with a lot of energy, decent enough lyrics, but are lacking in the hook department. Despite Land Air Sea, the second Special Goodness record, being very energetic and rocking, for a power-pop record, it seems to be short on the pop. A decent record from a drummer turned lead singer, The Special Goodness have a long way to go before they really strike a chord with anyone outside of the Weezer and Rocket from the Crypt fan base, fans who will buy side projects regardless. However, it does hint at a lot of promise. And if they can hone their skills and tour during their off time, they might be able to hit the studio and put all the momentum back into the project and come out with a record that is both engaging and friendly. I'll give this a C+.
