Virginia Coalition Rock & Roll Party (Digital Club Network) By: Alex Steininger
Virginia Coalition's Rock & Roll Party fuses power-pop, bar rock, and singer-songwriter folk-rock to create an almost radio-friendly, adult alternative sound. It suffers from blandness, like most adult alternative records. With bright production and a sense of detachment, the smart lyricism and otherwise intelligent songwriting falls prey to the search for a hit, while also straying, even running away from the possibility of a hit, a quandary that leaves the listener as perplexed is the band is. Still, the band marches on, crafting music that is fun and smart, so despite its pitfalls, it still comes up with a sense of warmth and familiarity (maybe the bland, radio rock style?), which helps you warm up to it - and eventually embrace it. It takes a long time to get into the record and cherish it, but if you give it a few tries, you'll feel yourself warming up to it and keep going. And once you're into it, you'll appreciate its warmth and dedication. I'll give it a C+.
