The Lovetones Be What You Want (Evil Records) By: Alex Steininger
Sydney, Australia-based pop trio The Lovetones' debut, Be What You Want, is an extraordinary example of stellar pop smarts, a lush, vibrant trip through a record collection loaded with Brit-Pop and 60s psychedelic vinyl. However, the band adds to, and doesn't steal, the sound they're going for, creating a Brit-pop delight that updates and refreshes instead of purposely ripping off riffs and beats. Bowie, The Beatles, and others play a huge role in the sound, creating a heavily textured, romantic journey of sound and style, something that has been lacking from Brit-pop as-of-late. I'll give it a B.
