I have no idea what is meant behind the title of THE HURT PROCESS' new album called Drive By Monologue, but it makes me think of all the times I was hanging out as a teen and someone would drive by screaming obscenities at me and my friends (both of them) out of their window. It was like a drive by shooting, but instead of a gun they were shooting off their mouth.
Anyway, THE HURT PROCESS takes heavy-handed emo and overlays it with lots of melodic song structures and pop sensibilities. The result is an album of what might be called post-screamo.
It is palatable enough for the masses of music consumers who want easily digested music, but still has enough of a kick to leave a mark on those of us who like our music to hurt (all puns intended). Some might call this a sell-out, it seems to me it is more a case of building a musical bridge to connect two widely disparate mediums.
