Danzig Circle of Snakes (Evillive) By: Mike SOS
The evil Elvis has returned with his most cohesive body of work since the original lineup of Danzig broke up after DANZIG IV. On Circle of Snakes, Glenn, joined by Tommy Victor (formerly of Prong), along with Jerry Montano (ex-Deadlights), and Bevan Davies (ex-Comes with the Fall) make the most formidable incarnation of the group since the mid '90s. The 11-track offering is no match for the early works, however it holds its own, thanks to Victor's solid fretwork and the toned-down industrial stance and pumped-up metal rhythms which pervade sinewy grooves like the ones found on the stripper-licious "Circle of Snakes" and the ominous march of "Night, BeSodom". While Danzig has made many of his headlines of late by landing on the receiving end of an ass-kicking, this album confirms that Danzig may not be the powerhouse of old, but can still place a heavy metal hex when need be.
