Western Aerial Rock 'n' Roll (self-released) By: Alex Steininger
Rock 'n' Roll is an apt-title from this Portland, Oregon-based trio. Western Aerial's debut full-length finds the band delivering fierce, yet melodic songs drenched in guitar and energy. This is sleazy, but contained rock 'n' roll grit cut to the bone, void of any fixings or flash. Instead, the band concentrates on nothing more than playing loud and excitedly, ensuring the listener gets a boost, and thus the motor running. However, the record suffers, as it isn't as sonically punchy as the band's live show. The recordings leave something left to be desired. The songs are well-written and the energy is there, however the recordings just don't exude the power they should, the juice they need to really hit you hard - like the band does live. Still, it is a nice offering from a band well on their way up. I'll give it a B-.
