Dem Brooklyn Bums Big Band
There Goes The Neighborhood (YouGottaProblem WitDis Records)

By: Alex Steininger

Dem Brooklyn Bums Big Band plays "hard-noised" New York Swing straight from the Bronx. Powerful horn lines, music that will get you swingin' and laughing, as well as an all out good time is what these guys will give you. Eight songs fill up their CD, There Goes The Neighborhood.

The CD starts off with "Boozin' And a Cruzin'". The horns are tight from the beginning. The music is hot, getting you swingin' with that loved one from the beginning. The lyrics are spicy, and the vocals are powerful. Adding an Italian touch to the music, they lead you through an intense swing dance, sure to burn holes in your shoes. Taking a clip from the movie of the same title, "On The Waterfront" is another song that will get you dancing and smokin' across the dance floor. The drums keep the beat nicely on the background, tapping throughout the song. The bass is tight, keeping the music on track, and the guitar has chops. The vocals are clean and lead you through a good time. The horns are smooth and delightful, emphasizing everything, and adding their own touch. Their golden sound lights up the room with energy, as they dive through their parts with ease. Keeping you swingin', the horns are the bloodline of the band. "Luigi's Famous Pun-Tango" side tracks for a track, leaving the swing behind, and covering new territory. Never losing touch of who they are, the tango reminds you of eating pasta by candlelight, and then getting up to tango with that loved one. The horns breeze through the music when the vocals are present, but take charge when the vocals take a break. And when they take charge, they take charge. Screaming through the music, they dominate your body and make you smile. Filling your body with heat, you quickly grab someone and begin to tango, sweating up a storm. All fun, and no worries. These guys know how to keep the party going. "Dominik the Bookie" is another smooth trip through good times. The bouncy-swing song gets you hopping and singing along with the band. "Puttin' On The Hitz" has a familiar sound to it, easily getting you to sing along. While the music will get you swingin' along, the horns burning up the dance floor, and making you move that much faster. The vocals are as nice as ever, adding a lot more flavor and heart to the music. And once again the horns show up the whole band, keeping everything hot and clever. But not to be outdone, the rest of the band puts forth a tremendous performance, keeping you on the dance floor having fun. This band is magical.

If your looking for some great swing, these guys will please you tremendously. Their music is fun and keeps you swingin', all the while keeping a hard edged attitude to everything. Swing, jump, or just sing along, but with these guys no matter what you do, your in for a real treat, understand man! A definite A.
