Udo
Holy (Nuclear Blast)

By: Jeb Branin

How can any true metal head not dig this? Udo has one of the most distinctive voices (and presences) in metal history. True, his solo material has never really managed to reach the masterful level of the mighty ACCEPT but that in no way means that it is anything less than top notch. And for that matter "Holy" is one of the strongest efforts he has produced under the UDO moniker. I was a little worried when the opening (and title) track kicked in because it seems to me to be too much of a blatant attempt at being "raw" and "heavy." As a result is rather cheesy, but once that hurdle is overcome, and the CD gets into its groove, this is a rocker. Heavy Metal that didn't forget to be heavy. Classic in all the right ways and just progressive enough to not sound too dated for the younger headbanging horde. Plus, you get Udo's warped warbling roar which has kept him near and dear to the hearts of bangers for over two decades. I repeat... how can any true metal head not dig this?
