Vanguard's Roots of Folk 3xCD (Vanguard Records)

By: Alex Steininger

Vanguard Records made their name in the 60s as one of the leading folk albums, with both studio albums and live collections from the Newport Folk Festivals. On Rots of Folk, a three-CD set, the label offers up three discs: Disc 1, Roots of Folk, Disc 2, Singers & Songwriter, and Disc 3, Folk Blues. The separation makes this collection delightfully pleasant and easy to listen to as it weaves through three different brands of folk. Containing each style to a disc, it serves up some of the biggest names: Joan Baez with Bob Dylan, Skip James, Doc Watson, Phil Ochs, Muddy Waters, Mississippi John Hurt, and plenty of others. Forty-five tracks, plenty of duets and collaborations, and a lot of material to sift through, Roots of Folk will keep you busy for quite some time. I'll give it an A-.
