Nightmares On Wax
Mind Elevation (Warp Records)

By: Cam Lindsay

It's pretty safe to say that George Evelyn is not only a pioneer as the man behind Nightmares On Wax, but he's also a brilliant artist. Everything he has done from "Dextrous" to Smoker's Delight, and his masterpiece, 1999's Carboot Soul, has managed to perfect the combination of acid jazz, electronic music and soul. It's been three years now since his last record (not including his DJ Kicks compilation and his EP with De La Soul), so everything should fall right into place with Mind Elevation.

Without even the slightest hitch, it begins with the mesmerising "Mind Eye", a track that doesn't quit, delivering the echoed down beats, quirky bleeps and smooth, jazzy sounds. As the album continues, it never misses a beat, throwing down silky ambience, with extremely rich and peaceful vocals contributed by LSK's Lee Kenny. Mind Elevation's production is extremely polished, with Evelyn's slick touch in full effect. Each song sounds lush and dreamy, making the R&B, hip hop and electronic stylings merge together nicely.

While it may not have the character and appeal that its precursor shone with, Mind Elevation is a plentiful affair for fans of Evelyn's. Sufficed it to say, there shouldn't be many disappointments. B+.
